Hey man, your site's really cool thanks for all the info.

We're looking at going to Koh Lanta in July, but I am a little worried about the wheather. Would it be a serious mistake to go suring this time?

Thanks in advance,
-Ben

Whoa Ben! Sorry I haven't answered sooner, but I usually check the FORUM section - don't scroll down on the indexes too often (for complicated reasons which I won't go into, there are actually 4 indexes altogether - and 2 separate blogs).
Weather on Lanta in July should be standard wet season with the normal sunshine between one or more showers/storms, prolonged rain not too common yada as per the WET SEASON page. Actually July tends to be not the worst of the wet season - statistically Sept and Oct are wetter, and they are still normally good for travel.
I haven't read of Lanta as a surfing destination - never seen a surfboard. But the beaches face west and during and after windier periods the swell will get up, so it's a possibility. But it will be onshore slop, not worth carting a board with you if that is what you are thinking.
If you mean body surfing or just swimming in the surf, I reckon it would be a good idea to read the advice on the DONT DROWN page.
It is sure going to be quiet in Lanta (and accommodation will be discounted nicely) - if you are a social animal maybe the first 2 beaches will have most going.
Often in the wet season the dirt road into the southern most beaches becomes inpassable in the steepest sections apart from 4 wheel drives. Heaps of good beaches on the tarmac section before this though.
Have a good trip,
tezza

Thanks for the all info, I will be in Thailand for 5 weeks. This post's date December 12 makes me remember Full Moon Party and I'll be there after a days in Bangkok and others in Samui.
Cheers

Dear tezza,

Thanks so much for your detailed replay.
I just read an article about thong nai pan at pangan. It sais that thats the most beautiful beach....
is this a recomanded one?
it seems like avery nice beach with clear water. I did not understant if its not windy since its for surfers as well.
They say it has a bohemian atmosphere...

Raya, Thong Nai Pan is a very nice beach, but I wouldn't say it is THE most beautiful.
Every time I've been there the water has been calm except at the north end of Thong Nai Pan Noi which tended to catch the dry season sea breezes a bit more and got a bit choppy.
I've never seen surf there but GIRLLRIG who lives there says that in the storms which occur in the wetter period Oct thru Dec, sometimes they get waves big enough to cause bad erosion of the beach and rip-currents for swimmers.
